Wyman’s mother had put the little ones to bed, and he sat with her in the living room, waiting for some word on Michael. He’d checked for messages about an hour ago and found one from his father, stating that the doctor had decided to keep Michael overnight, and that he and Lovina would be coming home soon.

Mom kept busy mending a pair of Dad’s trousers, while Wyman thumbed through the latest issue of The Connection magazine. Waiting for further news on his brother’s condition made it hard to concentrate. He’d also been thinking about Sadie and wondering why he hadn’t been able to get ahold of her this evening.

He set the magazine down and glanced at the clock above the fireplace. It was almost ten thirty—probably too late to be calling her now. It would have to wait until morning. I should have tried calling her again sooner, Wyman berated himself. Maybe I would have if Mom hadn’t been discussing her concerns about Michael. He couldn’t fault her, though, for he too was worried about his brother. If Michael’s back was too bad, he might not be able to work for several days, weeks, or even months. That would put their dad in a bind—especially since Ira Yoder, the young man he’d hired to help out after Wyman left, had made plans to move to Perry County, where his wife’s family lived. They’d be making the move next week. There was no way Dad could run the store by himself. He needed at least one other able-bodied man.

Wyman’s thoughts switched gears when he heard a vehicle pull into the yard. Mom was on her feet and heading for the door before Wyman could rise from his chair.

“Your daed is back,” she announced, flinging open the front door.

Wyman joined her in the entryway and waited until his father got out of the van. He was surprised to see that Lovina was not with him. Didn’t she plan to pick up her children and take them home?

When Dad entered the house, Mom gave him a hug. “How’s Michael doing? Was he in any less pain when you left the hospital?”

“Jah, but only because of the medication they gave him.” He glanced at Wyman then back at Mom. “Let’s go into the living room, and I’ll fill you both in.”

Once they were all seated, Dad explained that Lovina had decided to spend the night in Michael’s room, sleeping in a chair that reclined. She’d asked if it would be okay to leave the children overnight, and Dad had said it would be fine.

Mom bobbed her head. “I have no problem with it. I understand why Lovina would want to be there with her husband. She’s worried about him, as we all are. Please, Ernest, tell us everything you know about our son’s condition.”

“Well, after several tests had been run, the doctor said it appears that Michael has one ruptured disk, as well as some other disks in his back that are bulging.
